Near Sodom, on the beach of the Dead Sea, William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) spent seventeen days on his famous painting The Scapegoat". Holt sought to capture the singular atmosphere" of this background to the painting of the goat that, according to the Bible, was sent to the desert carrying the sins of the People .(of Israel in a yearly ritual performed by the High Priest (BenArieh, 1997).
