The mini-posters, full-colour illustrations printed on durable A3 and A4 cardstock, help guides instructing a wide range of populations. Since the mid-1980s, mini-posters depicting topics related to Earth sciences have been developed. In 2016, many Earth sciences mini-posters were prepared and hundreds of kits were sold to guides.
The Earth sciences mini-posters can be classified into different groups according to their nature:
a. Universal content that is relevant to various locations countrywide and worldwide.
b. Regional content – a particular area is portrayed with a landscape diagram, satellite photograph and geological map.
c. A geologic phenomenon is explained, including the geological processes that formed the phenomenon and the geological history relevant to its formation.
d. The stages of geological history of a particular area.
e. Human activity that relates to Earth science.
f. Natural phenomena such as floods and earthquakes.
g. Geologic time scale.
Clear, aesthetic illustrations on the front side of the mini-posters allow easy presentation of the learned concept by the guide. On the reverse side are texts that may assist the guide to expand the basic explanation given.
A study assessed guided tours that incorporated mini-posters in their lesson plan and found them to be a very effective learning tool. Using mini-posters helps to teach Earth sciences in the field, whatever the focus of the outdoor lesson/field trip may be. The mini-posters help guides to explain learned topics correctly, clearly and accurately, and as a result, understanding of the concept improves. We recommend expanding the use of the mini-posters currently available for purchase, as well as developing additional Earth sciences mini-posters that focus on other regions.

Keywords: Mini posters, Guiding tools, Earth sciences
Published: March 2020
Volume: 12(1)
Pages: 32-43
Article Type: Research article
Language: Hebrew
Link: journal12-1-3.pdf

Mini-posters: Visual aids for guides and teachers explaining Earth Sciences in the field H.
