Despite that, some 13,000 ancient sites have been recorded here to date, and many were excavated. One character\u2011 istic of the Negev (as well as of other deserts) is the abundance of prehistoric and early historic cult sites, dated ca. 8000\u20132000 BCE. Another is the many ancient roads.
