While the adults are busy, a group of youth, including Israeli youth from the Arava, Jordanian youth from Aqaba and the surrounding area, and Palestinian youth from Jericho, meet as well.
The “cross-border youth” acts in two main channels: creating and deepening ties between the youth from the different regions; and advancing local projects initiated by youth from each region and implementing them according to the different desires and needs of their communities.
The youth experience processes that reveal their common and different characteristics, experience communication without a common language, develop entrepreneurial skills, leadership and more. They are, in fact, their communities’ pioneers in everything related to changing the perception regarding the different cultures of our neighbors, accepting others and being able to get along and connect, despite the cultural rifts, conflicts and differences.
Each joint meeting takes place in another area – in Jordan, in West Bank’s Area C and in the Arava. During meeting times, local meetings for each area take place as well as mixed meetings concerning the various project.
The Israeli youth group consists of 25 young people from Beer Ora in Eilot to Idan in the Arava. During the last meeting in Aqaba, the Israeli youth chose two projects they wish to implement – a book of poetry and short stories written by Israeli, Jordanian and Palestinian youth, and a short documentary film describing their experience as Israeli youth in the Cross-border youth project. Currently, the book group, professionally supervised by Lior Dafni (of Be’er Ora), is collecting written materials and is raising funds to ensure a high-quality product. The documentary film group, supervised by Tal Levy (from Eilat), films the meetings and composes original music for the film. In a few months they will begin to edit their materials.
