During the challenging days imposed upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers from the Dead Sea and Arava Science Center’s Skin Research Institute, Masada, have been working on and developing novel sun damage treatment schemes. We all know that long-term, unprotected sun exposure can damage our skin and cause wrinkles, skin spots and even cancer. In a study initiated five years ago, during a large-scale survey of local plants growing in our extreme, hyper-arid environment, researchers found that some plants have unique active substances that may reduce or eliminate the immediate harmful effects of the sun’s rays, and may even prevent DNA damage, which eventually leads to cancer.
The advanced lab – which includes innovative equipment – enables the Center’s researchers to independently produce creams and cosmetic products. A new and unique face cream is currently being finalized and will soon be developed for commercialization. This product incorporates natural active ingredients based on plant extracts that have sun protective properties.
